How Leaders Can Enhance Bicycle Riding Purposes

By Rob Sutter

It seems like, for as much as bicycle riding is done in the United States, it seems to be conducted in higher numbers in other areas. People have taken the initiative to cast aside these forms of travel for the moment so that they can be more active in other areas. It's clear that this is growing in popular, in far-off areas more than any others, from what I've seen. In London, in particular, there is a growing demand for this and leaders have taken notice.

An article on the Globe and Mail talked about how Boris Johnson, a mayor in London, was attempting to raise popularity of city bicycle riding. It was one thing to talk about these advancements but he took matters further by actually going out and riding on his own. This is the kind of political statement which will be most effective, seeing as how he's in a position of power with many eyes watching him as well. It's the kind of action that should earn the attention of companies such as Linus Bike.

The amibious nature of the mayor cannot be understated, especially when he dedicated money as well as time into the matter. The article said that there would be $1.4 billion given to the construction of roads and paths made exclusively for cyclists. This says a great deal about the mayor's support of the idea, as you could imagine. It's also been said that this movement would not simply be a passing trend and I think that it has the potential to become a constant ritual.

I've talked to some people I knew and they believed that traveling exclusively via bicycle was an excellent idea. When I asked them why they didn't do it, they said that they weren't enough roads that met their needs. Even if they decided to ride to work, school, or wherever their destinations rested, they would be met with traffic congestion and travel would potentially become dangerous. I believe that the potential networks built could make matters easier for the riders who desire more steady pathways.

Bicycle riding is just one of the subjects that can be talked about and, more importantly, acted upon. The story of the mayor who was proactive on the matter is one that deserves special mention. Those who voted him into the position he's at now clearly have confidence in him and I don't think that the confidence is unwarranted in the slightest. One's words can hold a great deal of weight but I'd like to believe that the initiative will be worth much more.
