News Concerning Nose Treatments

By Tom Hyman

Cold symptoms can make anyone feel miserable. While there is still no cure for the common cold, it is possible to relieve some of the symptoms. The following home remedies can help to bring nasal congestion relief.

At the first symptom of a cold begin to push fluids. This can thin mucus that forms, making it easier for a person to breathe, help to moisten the throat and prevent dehydration. Limit caffeinated drinks as caffeine has a diuretic effect and may cause the symptoms to become more severe.

Keep the air in the room where the sick individual is staying moist. Steam can help to stop post nasal drip and reduce mucus. While humidifiers are effective, it is also possible to add moisture to the air with a pot of water heated on top of the stove. Add peppermint or eucalyptus oil for additional help.

When blowing the nose, do it in the right way. Do not sniff mucus back into the head, but blow gently into a tissue. Blowing hard can force germs back into the ear canals resulting in an ear infection. Press a finger over one nostril, cover the other with a tissue and blow gently in order to clear.

Saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation can also help to clear the passages. Irrigate using a neti pot or bulb syringe. If making one's own salt water solution use bottled water or boil tap water before use. This can prevent infections from other microbes that may be in tap water.

Stay warm and get plenty of rest. The body needs this energy to fight the cold or other illness causing the sinus problems. Use a blanket to cover when resting. Avoid the temptation to work through a cold as this can spread germs and cause the body to need more time for healing.

Drink hot liquids. They provide steam and prevent dehydration. In addition, the heat can help to soothe swollen membranes lining the throat and nose. Hot herbal or decaffeinated teas with lemon or a broth based soup are good choices.

Elevate the head at night. This allows mucus to drain away instead of into the sinus cavities. Adding a few pillows often makes it easier to sleep and get the needed rest.

When cold symptoms continue for more than a week without getting better, see a doctor. Often symptoms lasting beyond this period have developed into something more serious. Home congestion relief remedies work with colds but are not effective with pneumonia or bronchitis.
