How To Improve Website Ranking

By Eli Webbing

You have probably noticed from your personal experiences of web surfing and searching the Internet for information and products, that you very rarely look at more than the first few results before you quit and change your search term to something else.

So, if you have a website and want to receive adequate traffic (visitors), you have to find a means of getting your pages to appear in the top results for important keywords or you are not likely to raise your website traffic to any reasonable level.

It is incorrect to think of a website as having a higher position than another. In fact, Search engines assign positions to web pages and not websites as a whole. Although your home page can have a high position, it doesn't mean every page has a high position, though it can filter down to a degree. The more relevant a search engine thinks your web page is for a particular search term, the higher it will place it in the search results.

Your job, in terms of optimising your website is to make your web page as relevant as possible for phrases relevant to your niche or to try and make your web page the best possible match for the term. This can be very hard or quite easy depending on how much competition there is for the keyword and how well your rivals have optimised their key phrases. However, if you don't optimise your website you are missing out on traffic and revenue you could have gained. Most website builders include some optimization tools.

The good news is that firstly many sites don't optimize their pages very well, and secondly that there are many things you can do to optimize your website's content and pages.

Some of the most important factors search engines take into account are your page titles, links, and how your text is highlighted. Others are the keywords in your content, page length, image optimisation, time spent by visitors on site, meta tags and keyword density.

Make an effort to always include your keywords as part of your page, post and article titles. Note that a keyword can actually be a whole phrase. You should include it exactly as it is written. If possible, at the beginning or near the start of your titles.

If you observe most news sites and hugely popular websites, you can see that they include a lots of links to other sections of their website within the content. You should copy this format as it helps your website. It also gives your visitors more to read so they may stay longer.

Search engines count highlighted text in your articles as a mark of importance, so you should highlight your keywords in bold, italics or by underlining them.

While you want to stress your keywords in your article, if you over stress them your page may be penalised, by Search Engines, so where possible, replace your keywords with words with the same meaning (synonyms). You want visitors to spend as much time as possible so you should make your pages long, but not too long, perhaps 500 to 1000 words. You can also add some interactivity such as polls or media such as video.

Finally, if you include images on your site, include your keywords in their names, titles, captions and ALT tags e.g. 'photo of rabbit feeding mechanism'.

Essentially, there are many things you can do to optimize your website so that it eclipses your competition, especially when they are either not aware of, or able to apply these techniques. Applying these to each page of your website will give you a welcome boost in your website ranking.
