Your home is probably most vulnerable when you are away for an extended period of time. It's not a bad idea to let your neighbor know that you're going to be gone for a period of time and for them to keep an eye on your property. You most likely want to leave a contact number in case something were to happen. I always like to activate lights in my home during the evening using special electronic timers. You can also do this with radios and TVs so that it also sounds like someone's at home.

Another thing that you can do is install motion detecting lights that come on when someone is moving near it. It is also smart to securely hide your important documents and valuables so anyone peeking inside would not be tempted to break into your home. Make sure you keep your valuables in a safe box.

It's important to make sure your front part of your home is highly visible and easy to access, whereas the rear part of your home should be more protected. The more wide-open that your front is, the better because neighbors can see anyone walking up to your property. Behind your house it may be better to have a lots of prickly shrubs or thorny bushes that surround your backyard or a high fence. Any kind of warning sign on your wall could also help out with keeping someone from breaking into your home.
