Steel Fences for Business Security

By Mark Mahaffey

Many businesses need creative ways to increase their security. The traditional methods include things like security alarm systems, video surveillance cameras, motion detectors and even hiring security guards. However, if you are a business owner who wants to take it a step further, you may want to consider having steel security fences installed around your property.

A steel fence that surrounds the perimeter of your property is one of the best ways to keep criminals out. They have such a hard time climbing over it or getting through it that they may come to the conclusion that it is not worth their time an effort to try: they may then abandon their plan to rob you!

A steel fence, however, is not just useful for keeping people out of your property; they can also work the other way by keeping a guard dog in! If you would like to have a dog guarding your business, but are afraid that he would run away, a fence is the answer. By putting up a fence, the dog would have free run of your property, but would be unable to escape.

You may be wondering if the expense of a steel fence worth it, considering that you might be able to install a wooden one for less money. But steel fences are superior for several reasons. Wooden fences over time may rot. Replacing a rotting, wooden fence every two to three years can get very expensive. Wooden fences can also be burned down. Criminals can also cut down your wooden fence with a chain saw.

A steel fence, however, cannot be burned, will not rot and is resistant to most cutting tools that a burglar might have with him. If you put barbed wire across the top, you will make getting past the fence even harder for a criminal. Just be sure that you do not have large objects stored outside the fence that a criminal could use to scale the fence. Ladders, cars parked near the fence or even a close tree all could present ways he could get over the fence.

As a final security measure, it is a good idea to place motion detectors on your fence and connect them to your security system. These detectors will pick up vibrations on the fence if someone tries to tamper with it.
