What's this Furby craze all about?

By Amy J. Bartola

This year, one of the traditional "must have" toys is the Furby. The reasons why one toy just captures everyone's attention is up for debate. However, few could argue that Furbies will be one of the most popular this year.

Furbies are electronic machines that resemble a hybrid of an owl and a hamster. They are made of plastic and Fur. When brought home, they initially speak "Furbish". However, after interacting with the family, they learn English as well as 23 other languages.

Furbies, currently from Hasbro, made their debut during the holiday season of 1998. The supply of them has ebbed and flowed since then. They became scarce around 2007. Fortunately, the most current and improved version was released in the fall of 2012.

Furbies are remarkable in their almost human capabilities. They can distinguish your voice, and learn the language you speak to them. It takes them some time to learn your language, however, you can access online resources, as well as an Ipod app, that will allow you to learn Furbish.

Some parents speak of enjoying Furbies along with their children. Even so, Furbies are most appropriate for children ages 3 to 8 years. Since there are small parts, this poses a choking hazard. Therefore, Furbies are not recommended for children under 3 years of age.

Good comments from people who have purchased Furbies include that they are cuddly, fluffy and very durable.

Suggestions for improvement have been that an on/off switch, as well as a volume control button for the voice would be nice.

Since Furbies are so like living creatures, they may provide an opportunity to evaluate how your child may handle future responsibilities. For example, if your child has been asking for a puppy or a kitten, a furby may be a good way to test your child's ability to care for another creature.

The Furby can be a wonderful purchase for a number of reasons. It offers multiple learning and development opportunities for children. Parents can also immensely enjoy the quirks of the new family member.
