What are Face Serums

By Andrea Hamilton

A facial serum is a liquid beauty product applied to the facial and neck areas. It has got a particularly high content of active ingredients which penetrate and nourish deep down into the skin. These ingredients modify depending to the purpose it is designed for and are concocted differently to suit several skin types. A face serum is generally used as an element of a beauty regime with a cleanser, toner and moisturizing cream.

Types

Anti-aging creams and serums contain vitamin C which lifts and firms skin; increases elasticity which smoothens out wrinkles and fine lines; and defends against harmful oxidising compounds. Serums for dry skin contain hylauronic acid, a hydrating compound. Added to it could be rosemary, chamomile and almond oil. For the very best results these serums are best used together with a moisturizer. Oily skin serums has rosehip oil which heals marks from acne. Other formulations include peppermint, calendula, lavender, aloe and cucumber. Finally, there are serums for the thin delicate skin sorrounding the eyes.

Facial Serums versus Moisturizers

The are two differences of these cosmetic products. First is the larger size of molecules in moisturizing lotions. This aids them to only penetrate the uppermost layer of the skin in opposition to serums which can hydrate down to the 3rd layer. Moisturisers are great for sealing in moisture and are therefore used after a serum when the two are used together. Second is the higher percentage of ingredients in serums which make them superb for combating varied skin problems.

Application

Facial serums are best applied just before going to bed. Allowing the skin to absorb them and regenerate overnite. Your face or neck is initially washed with a cleanser before the rubbing of a few drops of the serum into the damp skin. Only a little is needed because of the serum's high concentration.

Caution

Serums can become oxidized and rancid, a process shown by a change in colour. Keep in mind that such products will harm the skin.
