The Importance Of Medical Barcode Labels

By Edward Turner

Using of the bar codes cuts the medical errors, and this is the reason that it is more popular in the hospitals as well as the health care facilities. The medical barcode labels allow the five rights of medication administration to be effective. That is making certain the right type of medicines, goes to the right patient, at the right time, the right does, and using the right route of administration.

The system begins with the provider making an electronic order, which is also passed through the pharmacy. The pharmacy ensures that a review is done to confirm that there is no allergies or interaction with the particular medication. After the store approves the order, they ensure that they recommend the right dosage. The information is later passed electronically to the administration and later to the nurse.

When this is done, the nurse should make sure that they have taken the medication to the patient on time. However, when they are at the bedside, they need to ensure that they have retrieved the barcode so that they can scan the medicines and ensure that they are administering the right product. In case the medication is not the right one, then the bracelet will give a warning.

The importance of the system is to make sure all the patients are safe by ensuring that no patient is given any wrong medication. The bedside is the place where the medicine reaches the patient, and if anything goes wrong there, then the patient may be put to danger. The technology has gone a long way to help patients.

However, since there are many systems in the industry, it is important for the hospitals to make sure that they have not only bought the right product but also keep up with the technology. Getting the wrong product or failing to maintain the system on the check could end up putting the health and life of the patient in jeopardy.

Before giving any barcodes to the patient, it is best that you test the products that one is certain that it is still functioning. Failure to do this might end up using a code that is not working and thus putting the wellbeing of the patient in jeopardy. This will mean that the product does not serve its purpose.

The success of this scheme mainly depends on the competence of the clinician that is using it. It is important that the health care facilities take the time to train their nurses on how best to use the service. When they do this, the chances are that they will save more lives. Ignorance by the health care providers can cause danger even if the barcode system being used is effective.

There are so many things that could go wrong when one is using the wrong barcodes labels, or when one does not know how to use it. Hospitals need to ensure that they have emphasized the importance of this system to the patients.
