Helpful Medical Billing Books

By Monica Burny

Medical billers and coders need to know a lot of information in order to code correctly. Inputting data is what goes on in the life of a coder on a daily basis. In order to accomplish this task, it's important to keep up to date books on codes.

Some books that you would need in billing are: CPT Code books, ICD code books, ICD9 billing code books and HSPCS code books. Each book has a different meaning. It is important to become familiar with these books because you will be reading them on a daily basis.

There are different types of code books. Here are a few that you should be aware of. A CPT Code book are listings of procedure codes and the explanation of each code. This should matter to you since you have to find the right code for each treatment that is given. These are also referred to as Current Procedural Terminology code books.

What do all of the acronyms mean? CPT stands for current procedural terminology. ICD stands for international classification of diseases. HSPCS stands for healthcare common procedure coding system. All of these books are helpful for people that need to learn more about the medical billing industry. There is always something new to learn.

CPT code books describe services and procedures that are performed by physicians. They list each code and give you an explanation for the procedure. It is important to become familiar with these. With ICD-9, you had to be familiar with around 14,000 codes. That is a lot of codes. However, ICD-10 has over 100,000.

The book that I find most useful is the CPT codes because I am constantly having to look up different procedures. I find myself buried in books all day at work. This is okay if you enjoy what you do. It is important to come to a point in which you can understand what you are doing.

HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System identifies products services and supplies that are not in the CPT codes. This can be orthotics, ambulance services and medical equipment. These books are often looked up as a necessary part of the medical billing process. It is good to become familiar with them. Over time, you will find your success.

A medical biller is someone that has taken time out to study. If you love the medical industry and really don't want to be a nurse or doctor, then this is a perfect career. I know lots of billers that spend their entire lives working in the industry. You will never be bored as a medical biller in any way, shape or form.
