Types Of Commercial Casters And Usage

By Jana Serrano

As manufacturers and industries are creating a better world for their consumers, making it more efficient and livable, consumers are still seeking better quality products. Thus competition is at high for these industries or companies to make their product stand out to their consumers and target markets. Pushing them to develop and innovate their products.

These applies to all products and merchandise, one of that are casters. There are two forms, one is the industrial and the other one are the commercial casters. The latter is the most common and widely used. They are synonymous with roller and wheels, they are often use interchangeably. They may be made from plastic, nylon, aluminum, rubber and or or stainless steel.

The types of rollers will depend on its usage, for example if it is for heavy duty purpose usually they use the industrial ones, and for the light weight or offices they use commercial rollers. For example, shopping carts have rigid rollers which consists of a wheel mounted to a stationary fork. This type of wheel tends to restrict the motion of the object so that it can travel along a straight line.

Commercial wheels, may have rigid rollers or swivel wheels. For rigid rollers, which are highly seen in shopping carts, it has a wheel that is mounted on a stationary fork for better movement. These tend to restrict the rolling motion of the shopping cart making it maneuverable, especially on a straight line. The swivel, are commonly found in homes and offices, have similar functionality to the rigid plus the swivel joint above the the fork, thus gives a 360 degrees movement making the wheels move in different direction.

The other form is the swivel caster, which is commonly found in chairs and tables in both home and offices. Has similar features with the rigid but with additional swiveling function that let the fork have the ability to move in 360 degrees. This make the rollers maneuverable to move in any direction.

The most widely known is the Twin Wheel Caster. It is very economical and relatively has a wide range of pricing. The sizes ranges from 40mm to 125mm in diameter. The best thing about this is that it has brakes available for most models. And the bigger it is the easier it moves over any obstacles.

The other popular form of wheel is the Spherical or Hooded Ball Caster. This is less pricey compared to the Twin Wheel. It is usually consists of hard plastic or rubber, and its size can range from 1 inch to 5.8 inches. The downside to this is it does not include brakes. So this is not recommended for moving slightly heavy objects when moving on an inclined area.

Similar to the Twin Wheel is the Single Wheel Caster. This roller can be use for heavy duty usage. Since the 16 inches roller are available so as the rigid models, thus it can definitely move a heavy furniture. Adding to this is its total lock brakes which can help in stability and durability. Prices may range differently according to its material, size and bearing quality.

Lastly, the Ball or Planetary Caster, it has an elegant feature good for many applications, and it is easy to roll. It comes with sizes from 1.5 inches to 3 inches diameter. It is available with metal or rubber tread.
