Nintendo Ads On Videos: How Can Social Media Networking Change?

By Rob Sutter

There's a great level of enjoyment that is seen in video games but is it possible that people will have more fun if they record everything? These types of videos are common on the Internet, often given the title, "Let's Play." Basically, people can record what they play and will speak over the footage, usually being informative if there is no comedy to be had. Nintendo has taken notice of this lately and it seems like the company's actions will play into the social media networking that the gaming mogul has.

Online marketing is immensely important and I think more people can stand to know about this. Nintendo recently made the news, as the company decided to place ads on certain YouTube videos. These would include those which utilize footage from their games, whether they are Let's Play videos or not. I think that this kind of news will deal a big blow to those who bring in revenue because of the work they have on YouTube, which could be both a good and a bad thing.

It's possible that some users will take this as encouragement, at least to some degree. Keep in mind that the quality of work can jump if more users take to original footage but I think that the jury is out on such a statement. I am more inclined to believe that Let's Players are more like vehicles of advertising and the videos they put out actually indirectly assist Nintendo. Keep in mind that not every gamer is going to take to certain titles immediately, so these videos can help in that regard.

After the news came to the surface, there was a bit of an outcry from fans. The responses were surprisingly mixed, though, as many YouTubers thought that their favorite channels may be compromised because of this. However, others felt like these various users shouldn't gain revenue from someone else's work, the video games in this case; would social media networking be impacted in the long run? It's a bit of news that agencies on the matter, fishbat included, will most likely keep a close eye on.

Let's Play is easily one of my favorite concepts on the Internet but only if they are done in the most appropriate of ways. Those who are serious about the commitment are able to cut up and create some of the best videos possible so that they can continue to attract fans. However, Nintendo's actions may cause people to shy away, which I hope I am wrong about. They may be able to place ads on videos but hopefully they aren't actions which cause channels to fade away on their own accords.
